Local Activities - Wildlife and Birdwatching

We enjoy the wildlife around us and always try to be sensitive to their conservation. From the fell top to meadows below the land varies greatly creating different habitats, and is home to many farm birds and animals including the brown hare.

Spring is always a favourite time of year, heralded by hares running and boxing in the fields and the calls of curlew, lapwing, snipe and oystercatchers selecting nesting sites. Young partridge, ducks, rabbits, leverets and occasionally fawns of the roe deer share the fields with newborn lambs, whilst higher up the fells grouse and birds of prey are nesting. May brings the call of the cuckoo, and swallows have returned to their old nesting sites in the buildings.

With lots of birds around the farm and garden we have lovely dawn choruses, and during a summers walk on the fellside grasshoppers can be detected by their chirps. In the still of the evening its pleasant to hear the call of pheasants and farmland birds as they settle for the night, as darkness falls the hoots of the tawny and little owls can be heard as they come out to hunt.

For birdwatchers there is a hide on the footpath about half a mile away, and listed below are birds we expect to see on the farm. The wider area of the Forest of Bowland has many more to offer including the Hen Harrier, Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, Short-eared Owl, Golden Plover and Ring Ouzel.
